Croom Water supply Rationalisation Project

Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Limerick County Council, is progressing plans to rationalise the water supply in Croom, Co. Limerick.

This project involves constructing 6km of pipeline connecting Croom to the Clareville Water Treatment Plant in Limerick City. This will improve the capacity of the existing water network and connect new proposed developments in the Croom area.

The new pipeline represents a €8.6 million investment in improving water supply security and resilience for homes and businesses in Croom. The existing drinking water infrastructure in the area is not sufficient to meet current demand and the area is prone to frequent nighttime restrictions. In addition to creating supply challenges for existing customers it has also impacted the delivery of new housing developments in the area.

This project will be carried out on a phased basis, with Phase 1 commencing in mid- December 2023. The project as a whole is expected to be completed by mid-2024.

What are the benefits of this project?

The works carried out as part of this project will:

  • Increase security and resilience of the drinking water supply to approx. 1,700 customers in the area.
  • Reduce the risk of nighttime restrictions.
  • Facilitate future growth and development, including the delivery of local housing and development.

What is involved as part of this project?

The project involves the construction of 6km of rising main. The section of works will take place along the northern end of the N20, from Ballygeale, and continue onto the L-1478 towards Croom. In Croom, the works will take place along Main Street and end on the R156 at Croom United FC.

The project also involves the decommissioning of the existing supply in Croom. Network extensions will be put in place in Croom to facilitate the decommissioning of the existing gravity main from the existing Croom service reservoir.

This project is being delivered to support future developments within the community. It will improve the capacity of the existing water network in the area, improving performance and reducing demands on the current network.

Will customers be affected by the works?

Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers. To deliver the works safely and efficiently, a road closure will be required along the L-1478 and L-1408. Details of this road closure will be communicated locally at a later time. Two-way traffic will be maintained along the N20. Local and emergency traffic will always be maintained.

The works may involve some short-term water interruptions and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water interruptions.

We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and works crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause.
